IMPORTANT! A STAR ID is Alabamaβs optional, federally compliant form of identification. After May 7, 2025 if you do not have a STAR ID, you will be required to produce additional forms of Acceptable Identification (such as a passport) when going through airport security and entering certain Federal Buildings. To clarify, May 7th is not the last day citizens can obtain a STAR ID, it is the federal enforcement date.
Your Standard Alabama driver license remains a valid form of identification for everyday use and allows you to legally drive. However, it will display the phrase "NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION" on the front, meaning it does not meet federal ID requirements for things like airport security or entering some federal buildings.
