STAR ID's are issued by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency

Driving State ID Locations

Alabama STAR ID (REAL ID)

A STAR ID is an Alabama driver license or ID card that meets Federal REAL ID requirements. STAR IDs are identified by a gold star in the upper-right corner of the card.

Beginning May 7, 2025, individuals age 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification (such as a valid U.S. passport) to:

  • โœˆ๏ธ Board domestic flights within the United States
  • ๐Ÿข Enter certain federal buildings and secure facilities

โญ STAR ID is optional but recommended for convenience when traveling.

You DO NOT need a STAR ID to:

  • Drive
  • Vote
  • Identify yourself for general identification purposes
  • Enter a state building or federal building that does not require an ID to enter.
  • Receive State or Federal Services

You DO need a STAR ID to:

  • Board a commercial aircraft
  • Visit military bases or secure federal facilities

How to Get a STAR ID
  • Visit an ALEA Driver License Office in Alabama
  • Bring Required Documents to verify:
    • ๐Ÿ†” Identity and date of birth
    • ๐Ÿ”ข Social Security number
    • ๐Ÿ  Principal residence address
